Window Materials & Assemblies

Designers of commercial buildings must choose from a wide range of possible window materials and assemblies. This section of the web site provides an introduction to these components, beginning with simple glazing materials and leading to complex facade systems. Conventional glazing materials and emerging glazing technologies are presented in the first two sections, which is followed by descriptions of frame materials and types of facade construction. In addition to the glazing and frame materials, the window is often integrated with various attachments and components that provide sun control and daylight redirection. The window and sun control devices may also be integrated with other building systems (such as ventilation) into more complex, double-envelope facade systems. The last section addresses skylights, atriums, and other means of providing daylight from above.
